Europe
The market most nannies imagine. The reality is more complicated.
Legal Access
Without UK or EU citizenship your options are narrow. The Overseas Domestic Worker visa lets you enter with an existing employer for up to 6 months. You must already be working for the family abroad. You cannot arrive independently and find work. Post-Brexit, EU nationals no longer have automatic right to work.
Pay
London: £41,000–£55,000 gross/year for experienced nannies. Rest of UK: £35,000–£42,000. High-end and rota placements can reach £60,000+. Figures are gross, income tax and NI apply.
Work-Life Balance
One of the strongest in the world. Five-day weeks are standard. Strong labour protections. Overtime is paid. Live-in is common in London but live-out is widely available.
Role Expectations
Childcare-focused. The UK has a long-established professional nanny culture. Families generally understand the distinction between a nanny and a housekeeper. Norland and CACHE-trained candidates are highly regarded.
Watch Out
Every reputable UK agency requires right to work before they will register you. Without a UK or EU passport, summer travel with an existing employer is the most realistic entry point, not independent placement.
Legal Access
Switzerland is not in the EU and has its own quota-based work permit system. Domestic work is not classified as skilled labour, making independent placement extremely difficult. Travelling with an existing employer is the realistic path for most foreign nannies.
Pay
Among the highest in Europe. CHF 4,000–6,500/month net for experienced nannies in Geneva and Zurich. The high cost of living offsets some of the salary advantage.
Work-Life Balance
Generally strong, five-day weeks, structured hours, good labour standards. Private household roles for high-net-worth families may involve more flexibility requirements.
Role Expectations
Primarily childcare-focused in professional placements. Bilingual candidates (French/English or German/English) are strongly preferred, particularly in Geneva and Zurich.
Watch Out
Small market and hard to enter independently. Most opportunities come through international private household agencies placing candidates who already have the right to work or are travelling with an established employer family.
Legal Access
Domestic work is not recognised as skilled labour in most EU countries, so there is no direct visa route for foreign nannies. Without EU citizenship or existing right to work, the only realistic options are travelling with an existing employer or summer placements with expat families. Nearly every agency listing in France, Germany, and the Netherlands states "EU passport or right to work required."
Pay
Paris: €3,000–€4,300 net/month for experienced nannies. Germany and Netherlands: €2,500–€3,800 net/month. Scandinavia comparable. Live-in positions are lower base but include housing worth €15,000–€20,000/year.
Work-Life Balance
Strong labour protections across the EU. Five-day weeks are the norm. Regulated working hours. One of the most balanced markets globally, particularly Scandinavia and the Netherlands.
Role Expectations
Childcare-focused in professional placements. Language matters significantly beyond expat families. French, German, or Dutch fluency opens far more doors than English alone.
Watch Out
The language barrier is real. Most families outside the expat circuit expect the local language. Without EU citizenship, Europe is largely a summer travel market, not a standalone career move.
Asia
Two separate markets exist here. Knowing which one you're entering matters.
Legal Access
Hong Kong has a large formal Foreign Domestic Helper visa system, but this is a separate lower-wage market predominantly sourced from the Philippines and Indonesia. Western professional nannies enter through employer sponsorship arranged through international private household agencies, typically for expat or affluent local families.
Pay
Professional Western nanny placements: HKD 25,000- 50,000/month (approx. USD 3,200-6,400). High-end and UHNW family placements go significantly higher. Live-in is standard; accommodation is provided.
Work-Life Balance
Demanding. Six-day weeks are common in private household placements. Long hours are the norm. Live-in is legally required for domestic helpers and Western professional placements typically follow the same pattern.
Role Expectations
Professional placements with expat and UHNW families are childcare-focused. The broader Hong Kong domestic market routinely combines childcare with cooking, cleaning, and household management. Be clear on the distinction before accepting a role.
Watch Out
The professional Western nanny market is small and agency-driven. Most positions advertised online are for the domestic helper market, a very different role, structure, and pay level. Access this market through established international agencies, not local job boards.
Legal Access
Singapore's Work Permit for Foreign Domestic Workers is restricted to specific source countries and the US is not among them. Western nannies enter through expat family employer sponsorship arranged through international agencies. You cannot apply independently.
Pay
Professional placements: SGD 4,000–8,000/month (approx. USD 3,000–6,000). UHNW placements can reach significantly higher. Live-in accommodation is typically included.
Work-Life Balance
Similar to Hong Kong, demanding, long hours, six-day weeks in most private household placements. Live-in is the standard arrangement.
Role Expectations
Expat-facing placements are generally childcare-focused. English fluency is a valued asset. Fully staffed households are common at the high end, meaning you work alongside other household staff.
Watch Out
Like Hong Kong, the professional nanny segment is a small slice of a much larger domestic helper market. Entry requires an established agency relationship and a family willing to sponsor. This is not a market you walk into independently.
Legal Access
Demand is growing among affluent Chinese families seeking English-speaking nannies, governesses, and educators. Work visas are employer-sponsored and arranged through international agencies. The process is more involved than the Gulf but not impossible for the right candidate.
Pay
Variable. High-end placements in Beijing and Shanghai with affluent or UHNW families: USD 2,500-5,000+/month, often with housing and other benefits included.
Work-Life Balance
Expect demanding hours. The expectation of availability is often higher than Western norms. Live-in arrangements are common at the high end.
Role Expectations
English language immersion and a Western approach to early childhood education are typically what families are paying for. Governess-style roles combining childcare and education are common. Some household duties may be included depending on the family.
Watch Out
Cultural and language barriers are real. Even in English-speaking household roles, daily life outside the home requires Mandarin. Vet the family and agency carefully, contracts and conditions need close attention before accepting.
The Gulf
The most accessible market for independent placement. The tradeoffs are real.
Legal Access
The Gulf is the most straightforward region for a Western nanny to enter independently. In the UAE the hiring family applies for your visa through MOHRE and Tadbeer centres. Fully employer-sponsored and well-established. You cannot self-sponsor, but families are accustomed to the process. British and Western nannies are actively sought by both Emirati and expat families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Pay
AED 8,000-18,000/month (approx. USD 2,200-4,900), tax-free. Housing is typically included for live-in roles. High-end and UHNW placements go significantly higher. Rota positions with travel frequently reach £1,000+/week.
Work-Life Balance
Demanding. Six-day weeks are standard. Twelve-hour days are common in private household placements. Live-in is the norm. One day off per week is legally required but the overall pace is significantly more intense than Europe or Australia.
Role Expectations
Professional placements at the high end are childcare-focused, but light household duties related to the children are common. Fully staffed households mean you often work alongside other household staff. International travel with the family is frequently part of the role.
Watch Out
Your legal status is tied entirely to your employer's sponsorship. If the relationship breaks down, your visa status is at risk. Vet the family thoroughly before accepting. The Gulf offers earnings and international experience, but it is not a market that rewards work-life balance as a priority.
Australia
Familiar in many ways. Harder to enter than it appears.
Legal Access
There is no dedicated nanny visa for Australia. Nannying is not on the skilled occupation list so employer-sponsored routes are not available. Realistic options are: the Working Holiday visa (ages 18-35, valid 12 months, not designed for career nannies), travelling with an existing employer, or already holding permanent residency.
Pay
AUD 25-38/hour. Full-time placements typically AUD 50,000–75,000/year. The Fair Work Act applies. Overtime, leave entitlements, and minimum wage protections are enforced.
Work-Life Balance
One of the strongest globally. Five-day weeks, regulated hours, strong employment protections under the Fair Work Act. The culture around work-life balance is genuinely different from the Gulf or Asia.
Role Expectations
Close to US and UK norms. Childcare-focused, professional expectations, families generally understand the role. Shared language and cultural familiarity make the transition easier than most international moves.
Watch Out
The visa situation is the main barrier. The Working Holiday visa is not a career path, it has age limits, time limits, and work restrictions. Without existing right to work or an employer bringing you, Australia is difficult to enter as a professional nanny independently.
Caribbean
Not a standalone market. An extension of the one you already know.
Legal Access
The Caribbean is two very different situations. Travelling with a US-based family to their Caribbean residence requires no separate work authorisation, your US employment continues. Permanent placement with a locally-based family is different: many islands are British or Dutch territories (Cayman, BVI, Turks and Caicos, Sint Maarten, Aruba) and work permits can require EU or UK citizenship, or local authorisation that is hard to obtain independently.
Pay
Travel placements with US families typically continue at your existing US salary. Most high-end opportunities come through the same New York and Palm Beach private staffing agencies. The pay structure reflects the US private household market.
Work-Life Balance
Depends entirely on the family. Travel placements can involve irregular schedules tied to the family's vacation pattern. The environment is appealing but the hours are not always lighter than your regular position.
Role Expectations
Similar to US private household norms. Families dividing time between multiple residences expect the same standards and continuity they have at home. Travel readiness and flexibility are assumed.
Watch Out
Don't conflate travelling to the Caribbean with your employer and building a career there. They are different things. For permanent island-based placement, research the specific island's work permit rules. They vary significantly and EU or UK citizenship is often required.
Legal requirements change. Always verify current visa rules with official government sources or an immigration professional before making decisions.
